AI Champions That Drive Adoption

  • 2 min read

An AI Champion is someone inside the organization who actively drives the use of AI in their team or work area.

They are individuals who:

  • Regularly use AI in their own daily work

  • Help colleagues try and apply AI tools

  • Bring real feedback from the ground to leadership

  • Act as a bridge between AI strategy and actual day-to-day practice

AI Champion

In short, an AI Champion is someone who helps others actually use AI.

The Common Gap

Many organizations introduce AI Champions as part of their adoption efforts. People are given the title and invited to regular discussions. However, without a clear role and practical support, the role often becomes limited to attending meetings and sharing updates  while actual usage of AI tools in daily work remains low.

The issue is rarely the individuals selected. More often, the program itself does not give champions a clear mandate to influence behavior and support their peers.

Why Clear Definition Matters

When the role of an AI Champion is unclear, people tend to treat it as a symbolic title. When the role is clearly defined around driving adoption, champions can focus on practical actions that create real impact.

AI Champions help translate better processes, clearer communication, and defined decision rights into everyday behavior across the organization.

What Effective AI Champions Actually Do

Successful AI Champions focus on action. They typically:

1

Lead by Example

They actively use AI tools in their own work and openly share both what works and what doesn’t.

2

Support Their Peers

They help colleagues try tools, answer practical questions, and remove small barriers.

3

Provide Real Feedback

They surface insights from the frontline (both positive and negative) to leadership.

4

Influence Through Credibility

They encourage adoption by building trust rather than applying pressure.

5

Track Local Progress

They monitor simple adoption signals in their own teams and celebrate small wins.

AI Champion Toolkit

Use this checklist to strengthen your program:

Organizations that give champions a clear purpose, practical support, and room to act tend to see stronger and more consistent use of AI. Those that treat the role mainly as a meeting-based title often see limited progress.
